Wastewater Operator Certification

In January 2006, the Maine DEP transferred all of the administrative duties for Maine's Wastewater Operator Certification program to NEIWPCC, administered through the NEIWPCC South Portland/JETCC office. These duties include coordinating certificate renewal, record keeping, and applications for Maine's Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator exams. Eligibility of training courses for continuing education credit must be approved by Maine DEP. To receive training approval, proof of training and participation in training courses should be submitted directly to the NEIWPCC South Portland/JETCC office.

Wastewater Operator Exam

Beginning in March 2015, certification testing changed from pencil and paper to a computerized test. Computer based testing modernized Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Wastewater Operator Certification process and testing.

Computer-Based Testing (CBT) gives examinees a more convenient testing schedule, more opportunities to take the Biological or Physical-Chemical exam, and receive results immediately upon completion of the exam.

Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP) provides testing services for the exam. Exams can be scheduled at any AMP Assessment Center in the United States. There are currently two AMP Assessement Centers in Maine - Portland and Holden, as well as a location in Portsmouth, NH. Testing times are available Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM.

CBT Exam applications must be submitted to the NEIWPCC South Portland/JETCC office. The CBT application fee is $75 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC. This fee allows an examinee to take the same grade level exam as many times as needed within a two-year approval period. Unless applying for a different grade level or the two-year period has expired, it is not necessary to reapply to NEIWPCC/JETCC or pay another application fee. There is a separate $96 exam fee payable to AMP for each attempt.

Paper testing is only offered in Presque Isle. The next paper exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11, 2017. The application for a paper exam and fee of $125 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC are due in the NEIWPCC South Portland/JETCC office by Friday, March 24, 2017. They should be postmarked by Monday, March 20, 2017.

Spray Irrigation Treatment System (SITS) paper exams are offered on an as-needed basis at three testing locations: Portland, Bangor, or Presque Isle. The application fee is $125 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC.

Reciprocity - Any person holding a valid certification in another state or country which grants reciprocity to Maine operators may be issued a Maine certification in a comparable grade without examination. The education and experience requirements must still be met. The certification issued by the other state or country must have been obtained by written examination. The application fee for reciprocity is $125 payable to NEIWPCC/JETCC.
